1. Marketplace plans

Plans on the government Marketplace are priced on your household income. If your income is in range, tax credits can lower your monthly price. Every Marketplace plan covers pre-existing conditions.

For 2027, the income cap on tax credits is back, so many higher earners will pay the full price. You can enroll during open enrollment, which starts November 1, or after a qualifying life event.

2. Private plans

Private plans are priced on age and health instead of income. Healthy applicants often get a lower price, and many plans can start any month of the year. You answer health questions to apply, and not everyone is approved.

3. A spouse or partner’s employer plan

If your spouse has coverage through work, adding yourself may be an option. Compare the cost of family coverage against your other choices. It is not always the cheapest route.

4. COBRA

If you just left a job, COBRA lets you keep that employer plan for a while. You usually pay the full price plus a small fee, so it is often expensive. It can still make sense if you are in the middle of treatment.

How to choose

  • Income in range for tax credits? Start with the Marketplace.
  • Healthy and paying full price? Compare private plans too.
  • Need to switch or start coverage soon? Look at private plans or a special enrollment period.
  • Ongoing health needs? Marketplace plans protect pre-existing conditions.
