When open enrollment is

Marketplace open enrollment starts November 1 each year. To start coverage on January 1, you usually need to enroll by December 15. Final deadlines vary by state.

Special enrollment periods

Certain life changes let you sign up for a Marketplace plan outside open enrollment, usually within 60 days of the change. Common ones include:

  • Losing health coverage, like leaving a job or aging off a parent’s plan
  • Moving to a new area
  • Getting married
  • Having or adopting a baby

Private plans can start any month

Many private plans accept applications all year. If you are generally healthy and need coverage soon, this can be the fastest way to get covered. You answer health questions to apply, and approval is not guaranteed.

Do not wait on a gap

A gap in coverage can mean paying the full cost of an emergency. If your coverage is ending, start looking now. Your agent can tell you which options are open to you today.
